Did anyone else constantly rearrange their bedroom furniture growing up? There’s something about small changes that can make you feel like metamorphosis is possible in all aspects of life. It’s like a 90s movie when the girl took off her glasses, combed her hair, and was automatically a beauty queen (but in house form).
Is your brain constantly whirring with ways to improve your home? If you have the home improvement bug, winter is a great time to do projects around the house. You can stay cozy indoors and fend off Seasonal Affective Disorder by staying productive. And as an added perk- DIY projects are a great way to increase the value of your home. You’d be surprised how much a few small changes can impact the value of your home.
Here, our Compass Boulder realtor team lists some easy DIY projects that can make the biggest impact:
Give your Kitchen Cabinets a Makeover
Old, outdated kitchen cabinets are energy vampires for your feng shui. Cabinets are the most prominent feature in kitchens. Transforming your cabinets changes everything. As long as the frames and doors are structurally sound, you can easily give them a facelift. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A strong cleaner
- Sandpaper
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- A free weekend
Give the cabinets a light sanding, a coat of primer (if you’re painting over something dark), and a few coats of paint. You’ll be amazed at how stark the transformation is. To take it even further, buy some new handle hardware.
After how this project turns out, we’d be shocked if you didn’t get a little addicted and tackle your bathroom cabinets next.
Create an Accent Wall
An accent wall is an incredible way to add dimension and character to an average space. You have a couple of different options here:
-
Use creative painting techniques
Painted accents can enlarge, elongate, or shorten a room depending on how you design it (check this graphic for reference). You can also opt for a mural option. You don’t have to be an artist to create a unique look. Plenty of paint-by-numbers or geometric stencils can be utilized to create your signature look.
-
Add texture
Textured walls are an incredible way to add subtle character to a room. There are a bunch of different options here. You can opt for shiplap, wood panels, board and batten, or wainscoting.
-
Wallpaper
There are some incredible modern, moody, floral, and fun wall peel-and-stick wallpaper options. Wallpaper sets a tone and is easy to apply.
Add some curb appeal
Take if from our Boulder realtors, curb appeal never goes out of style! There are so many things you can do here:
- Add window boxes and potted plants to your door.
- If you’re feeling adventurous, you could also paint your front door an eye-popping color.
- Add modern house numbers to your stoop.
- When spring comes, get your hands dirty and plant some perennials. Colorado soil loves lavender, sage, and sedum.
Create a unique backsplash
Peel-n-stick tiles have transformed the DIY game. They’re straightforward to install and they look amazing. They can also be easily removed if you want to change up your look again in the future. Backsplash can be incorporated into the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room.
Paint your bathroom tile
If you have any old, outdated tile floors you don’t have to shell out hundreds (or thousands!) of dollars to install new flooring. Paint the tiles instead! There are many different types of stencils you can buy. Opt for Spanish tile, checkered, floral, or even a solid color. There are a couple of things you need to know before beginning this project:
- You’ll need to prep by applying a paint primer to the tiles and grout.
- Use oil-based (not water-based paint), otherwise, it will disintegrate.
- Finish your project with a polyurethane sealant. You’ll need to apply 2-3 coats.
Add New Hardware
You’d be surprised how big of a difference small details make in the overall aesthetic of your home. Replace your door handles throughout the house. Add new light fixtures. Replace your kitchen faucets. These tiny details will make a big difference.
